Located at an altitude of 1,800 meters, Manza Onsen is known as the hot springs closest to the stars, a famous hot spring resort that has drawn people for centuries. The snow here is light and fluffy as a feather, blowing away with the lightest breeze. At Manza Onsen Ski Resort, you can enjoy both, and enjoy an unmatched, luxurious time.
17:00
Views of the setting sun and a sky full of stars, from the open-air bath
Manza Onsen is located at the highest altitude of any hot spring in Japan that can be reached by car. From Komakusa no Yu, the open-air bath, you can see clouds illuminated in golden light; the sunset sky, changing from orange to red; and a starry sky with countless constellations spread out like you’ve never seen before. Manza Kogen Hotel’s Isoniwa Rotenburo (open-air bath) has four different kinds of hot spring water, all sourced right here, that you can enjoy during your stay. Enjoy the best of winter in the Yukimi Rotenburo, surrounded in a world of white snow and steam.
18:00
Pre-experience dinner at the Shakunage buffet restaurant
Enjoy a buffet spread including boiled crab, roast beef, and many locally-sourced ingredients. Every dish—Japanese, Western, Chinese, and sweets—has been prepared with care by our expert chefs.
6:00
Start the day with a morning bath
Manza Onsen’ hot spring water has a rich quality, with what is said to be the highest sulfur content in Japan, and is quite cloudy. It is excellent for making skin more beautiful, and is also said to be effective in reducing muscle pain and fatigue. That means a bath first thing after waking up is a great way to start the day—effective, but in an enchanting environment. Watch the sky slide from night into morning, with spectacular views of the mountains emerging in the new sunlight. A beautiful sight that words fail to fully express.
7:30
First Track with the feather powder snow, found only here
Manza’s snow is known as “feather powder snow,” snow as light and fluffy as feathers, the kind that won’t form a ball when you squeeze it in your hand. It’s the kind of snow found in parts of Hokkaido, right here on the main island of Japan. The stage for the First Track is the Panorama Trail. On this spacious place, you have the whole hill to yourself, with spectacular views of the amazing Mt. Asama. The course is a perfectly groomed slope, beautifully finished during the night. So which will it be this morning: a groomed run, or a powder flight in the snow that has piled up after grooming? Another reason for the excitement when you wake up!
8:30
Luxurious breakfast in the main dining room
Enjoy a delicious American-style breakfast made with locally-sourced ingredients as you sit in a special, private space: the chef’s special omelet, meat and a Western-style tofu from nearby Tsumagoi village, yogurt from Kita-Karuizawa Toyota Dairy Products in Takinohara town, and more.
10:30
Double your fun with Gelande (slope) Refresh
Refueled by your delicious breakfast, it’s time to enjoy the slopes again. The panorama Trail is the best slope to take in the great views in Manza, including the massive Mt. Asama. Take a few moments to savor the view, and maybe take a few commemorative photos. The Mt. Manza slope is maintained before noon in Gelande Refresh—a retouching by the grooming equipment. That will probably keep you on the slopes until it’s time for a late lunch, perhaps the gomoku ramen noodles from Manza’s famous Shakunage (rhododendron) Restaurant. This will warm even the chilliest body to the core. Another recommendation is the Yubatake curry, inspired by the hot spring of the same name (and which means, “onsen field”). The cute snowman-shaped curry at the on-slope restaurant Alyeska is also popular.
