Mikuni Kaido Shiozawa-juku Bokushi Street

Shiozawa-juku flourished as a post town along the Mikuni Kaido, connecting Edo and Echigo. It developed as a production area for textiles such as Echigo Jofu (an important intangible cultural asset) and Shiozawa Tsumugi (a traditional craft). It is also known as one of Japan’s prominent heavy snowfall areas. The current Shiozawa-juku Bokushi Street has been revitalized with the cooperation of local residents, recreating the atmosphere of the old post town with its characteristic “gangi” (arcade) streets, aiming to create a town that future generations can be proud of.
