On the way to the Shimoda city district, you will encounter an unusual urban scenery—the Perry Road. This was the route Admiral Matthew Perry marched along in 1857 to negotiate the Treaty of Shimoda between Japan and the US. In the vicinity of Perry Road, the southern part of the Izu Peninsula features stylish shops nestled in buildings constructed using soft stones from layers of volcanic ash and pumice from submarine volcanoes.
